Suiho En (“Garden of Water and Fragrance”) is a 6.5-acre authentic Japanese garden fashioned after “stroll gardens” constructed during the 18th and 19th centuries for Japanese Feudal lords. This San Fernando Valley gem was created by Dr. Koichi Kawana to provide beauty, relaxation, inspiration and a better understanding of Japanese culture using reclaimed water. Dr. Kawana designed more than one dozen major Japanese gardens in the United States, including the botanical gardens at LACMA.

In 1924, Phelan Beale, a prominent attorney bought the house for his wife Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale. Edith was the daughter of Beale’s law partner, John Vernou Bouvier, and sister to John “Black Jack” Bouvier, would have two famous daughters. Although the family had their share of scandals, the Bouviers and the Beales were unquestionably considered good families in high society circles. Phelan and Edith had three children, the oldest Edith Bouvier Beale, followed by two brothers Phelan Beale Jr. and Bouvier Beale. Grey Gardens was the perfect weekend escape for the New York attorney and his family. Soon, however, Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (affectionately known as “Big Edie”) chose to spend more and more time away with the children in the Hamptons, throwing lavish parties featuring her musical song and dance performances.

But after a bad fall in 1977, Big Edie suffered a badly broken leg, which went untreated. By the 1960s, the Beales had grown more reclusive and paranoid (though Little Edie left to attend JFK's inauguration), partly because Big Edie was developing arthritis and partly because of a robbery that happened while the two were out at a party. Some 20 years after Little Edie retired to East Hampton, their beloved grand piano was a warped, defunct fossil of its former self, and the entire main level was coated in cat hair, cobwebs, and dust.

Even the contractor said, "'You've gotta tear it down. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to rebuild,'" Quinn recalls. "But then it wouldn't be Grey Gardens, would it? It'd just be another house, or worse, a copy of another house." So, Quinn persuaded everyone to get on board, and the project wrapped in a year. Then she brought the furniture back in, including beautiful iron beds and clawfoot tubs, and everything that couldn't be restored was duplicated to evoke the period. For example, "the curtains in the living room were still hanging but were in shreds, so I took the fabric to a decorator to match them," she says.

Grey Gardens, the seven-bedroom estate at 3 West End Road in East Hampton that once belonged to Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s aunt and cousin Edith Bouvier Beale and Edith Beale, is on the market for the first time since 1979. Big Edie and Little Edie, as the formerly well-to-do mother-daughter duo were known, lived in the palatial estate in total isolation and squalor, surrounded by raccoons and stray cats. A 1975 documentary Grey Gardens, shot by Albert and David Maysles, followed the daily life of this eccentric pair while also capturing the deterioration of their once grand home. The success of this documentary led to other takes on the story including the highly acclaimed HBO film of the same name, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, and a subsequent Broadway musical.
